New Chitose Airport～Train bound for Sapporo

  There is only one Arrival Gate for international flights, located on the 2nd floor of International Terminal.

  As soon as you exit the Arrival Gate, there will be a foreign currency exchange corner and convenience store on your left. There are also toilets and vending machines at both ends of the terminal.

  The “LAWSON” convenience store is open in accordance with international flights. Japanese convenience stores are really cool!

  Diagonally ahead to your left is a multi-language Information Center (8:00 a.m.～9:30 p.m.). Diagonally to your right is a smoking area. Smokers should be aware that there very few smoking areas in airports or train stations.

  The airport is very large, and you will find it easier to get around if you have the New Chitose Airport Terminal Guide. It contains maps and details about the shops making it a convenient reference for last minute shopping before your flight home. It is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Thai.

  After you have finished everything you need to do, it’s time to board the JR train. Walk straight ahead.

  From the International Terminal head toward the Domestic Terminal where the JR station is located. You can walk right to it without having to change floors.

  Use the Conveyor Walkway to travel through the long corridor (approx. 300m) connecting the two terminals.

  The corridor is very long, and if you have difficulty walking, you can use a Special-Assistance Vehicle if necessary.

  There are toilets and nursing rooms located along the Conveyor Walkway.

  At the end of the Conveyor Walkway is the Domestic Terminal.

  After getting off the Conveyor Walkway, walk straight and directly through the center area of Shopping World.

  You can enjoy shopping along the way during business hours for the stores.

  At the end of the passageway are elevators directly connected to the New Chitose Airport Station in the basement.

  After boarding the elevator, get off at the first basement level.

  However, there are times after the arrival of international flights that long congested lines form and it takes a long time to get on an elevator.

  If that happens, use the Terminal MAP to find another elevator.

  Or, you can take an escalator to the JR Station on the first basement level. There is only one JR Station so you can’t miss it. If you follow the train symbols, you will definitely get there.

  So, you have arrived at the first basement level. The JR New Chitose Airport Station has a JR Information Desk for foreigners (8:00 a.m.～7:00 p.m.).

  You can present your Exchange Order to obtain a Japan Rail Pass, Hokkaido Rail Pass, or other pass at the JR Information Desk.

  At the Purchase Window, each group of travelers must get a numbered ticket and wait in line to be called.

  You can also buy train tickets to Sapporo Station from a vending machine.

  Departure times for the Rapid Airport Express to Sapporo Station are displayed on the timetable.

  Select English or another language from the LANGUAGE menu on the upper right corner of the screen and touch the button.

  Let’s suppose you selected English and that you want to buy a “U Seat” reserved seat ticket on the Rapid Airport Express on the lower right corner of the screen. (If you wish a free-seating ticket, touch the “Non-reserved seat” tab.)

  Touch the Rapid Airport Express on the right side and follow the prompts to purchase your ticket.

  There are two final stops for the trains, Otaru Station and Sapporo Station. But don’t worry because they both stop at Sapporo Station.

  When buying a reserved seat ticket, you can also specify the seat you want. If you don’t understand how to buy the ticket, then ask the station attendants. They are very helpful so there is no need to worry.

  After buying your ticket, go to the ticket gate. If you are using a Japan Rail Pass, show it to the station attendant at the window on the far right.

  When using a ticket, insert your ticket into the ticket insertion slot on an automatic ticket gate. Don’t forget to pick it up after you have passed through the gate!

  Use the escalator, elevator, or stairs to go down to the platform in the basement.

  New Chitose Airport Station is the final stop for inbound trains. Rest assured that all trains departing from Tracks 1 and 2 go to Sapporo Station.

  You can buy water and juice from the vending machines on the platform. In Japan, you can find vending machines everywhere.

  Beverages are easy to buy, so if you have the time, you should try buying one. (Only Japanese yen coins and transportation IC cards are accepted.)

  Coaches for reserved seats start with Coach #4. Coaches #1～3 and Coaches #5 and 6 are for free seating.

  The entrance for a reserved seat coach is marked with a red “U.”

  Stow your luggage in the overhead bin displaying your seat number, and take your seat. Every coach for reserved seats and free seating has one toilet. Note that there are no sales of snacks and other items on the Rapid Airport Express.

  Reserved seat coaches have common storage areas for large luggage.

  The coaches also have English signs. English announcements are made in a female voice after the Japanese announcements in a male voice.

  Your destination is Sapporo Station, six stops after leaving the airport. There is a stop called “Shin Sapporo Station,” which is confusing. Be sure not to get off there. Also, be aware that sometimes Sapporo Station is not the last stop, so be careful not to miss it.
